Automatic connection instructions – describes the conditions under which the occurrence of a VPN connection should be established automatically without user intervention.
Two kinds of IntelliVPN rules for iOS:
- Built-in rules, the default application
- Custom rules
Due to the presence of automatic connection rules, the feature "Kill Switch" is implemented. The essence of this feature is that all network activity will be stopped on iOS level, as long as the VPN connection is established. This prevents data leakage in the VPN bypass.
Built-in rules are created and activated automatically when the user presses the button "Connect" on the main screen of the app. Thanks to these rules the VPN connection will be restored automatically after the network change (Cellular -> Wi-Fi and vice versa), or after an absence of Internet connection.
The rules will be in active mode as long as the user does not press the "Disconnect" button, even if the application is not launched
For example, if a user turn on airplane mode, and then turn it off, the VPN connection will be restored automatically when network active.
Custom (Users) rules
Users, who want more control, can set up their own rules to automatically connect. The user can specify a list of Wi-Fi networks, which when connected to the VPN connection will be created automatically. Or vice versa, the user can specify a list of trusted Wi-Fi networks, which when connected to the VPN connection will be automatically disconnected.
For example, you can create a rule that will establish a VPN connection when the device is connected to all Wi-Fi networks, in addition to the home network. When connecting the device to the home network, VPN connection will be disconnected.
When you turn on user-defined rules, built-in rules are disabled, and the VPN connection is automatically established only according to your rules.
Custom Rules Management
Manage user rules is made in the section "Rules". To access this section, click on the corresponding icon on the main screen of the app, as shown below:
To enable user-defined rules in the opened window set the switch to "On":
After that, you will see a block of rules made up of two sections:
"Cellular Networks" section
In this section you can configure the rules applied when the device is connected to the cellular network. If the switch "Cellular networks" is set to "On", then connecting the device to the VPN network connection will be automatically established.
If the switch is set to "Off", then, when connecting the device to a VPN network connection, if it was active, it will be disabled.
"Wi-Fi" network section
In this section, set up the rules applied when the device is connected to Wi-Fi networks. Go to this section to adjust the black list or a list of trusted Wi-Fi networks.
If the switch "Connect in any networks" is set to "Off", then, the VPN connection will be established automatically when the device is connected to Wi-Fi networks, as specified in the "Networks to connection".
If the list is empty, then when you connect the device to a Wi-Fi network, VPN connection is established automatically. To add a Wi-Fi network in the list of "Networks to connection", click on the "+" button, located at the bottom of the screen.
If the switch "Connect in any networks" is set to "On", then the VPN connection will be established automatically when you connect the device to any Wi-Fi networks, other than those specified in the "Exceptions".
When connecting the device to a Wi-Fi network from the list of "Exceptions", the VPN connection will be disconnected.
